 The Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital, founded in 1913, is among the top 10 comprehensive cancer centers worldwide, combining world-class fundamental, translational, and clinical research with dedicated patient care. Their initiatives to promote excellent translational research have been recognized by the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, when they designated them ‘Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence in Translational Research’.


The Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital (NKI-AVL) collaborates closely with other research institutes, hospitals, funding bodies and pharmaceutical companies in the areas of fundamental and applied cancer research.

The Knowledge Transfer & Contracting department within NKI-AVL (‘KT&C’) helps both fundamental cancer researchers and clinicians to conclude research-related contracts, with other academic research institutions as well as with industry and for pre-clinical and clinical research.

One of NKI’s main aims is to see its scientific breakthroughs being turned into novel products and services that benefit cancer patients. To help achieve this, KT&C is charged with maximizing the chances that the Institute’s research results find application in healthcare. KT&C manages the patent portfolio and other intellectual property assets of the institute. They actively engage with life science, healthcare companies and biotech investors who have the commitment and resources to bring their innovations to the market. In addition, KT&C also handles all consultancy agreements for the institute and has a sizeable portfolio of research materials which it licenses to industry.

Position in the organization:
The Business Developer will report directly to the Head KT&C.


Responsibilities The role of the Senior Business Developer covers a broad spectrum of activities and tasks:

  • Evaluating of research results for commercial potential and protection of intellectual property.
  • Conducting market research and identify and approach potential licensing/co-developmentpartners.
  • Assisting in setting up new companies that aim to develop and commercialize novel productsrelevant to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
  • Being lead negotiator for license and research contracts, supported by KT&C’s legal team.
  • Supporting researchers and clinicians in their interactions with third parties.
  • Keeping abreast of developments in cancer research and in industry.
  • Monitoring correct follow-up of commercial and research contacts.
  • Performing due diligence on assets (IP, data, materials) that are the subject of interest fromexternal parties.
  • Developing and maintaining an extensive network within NKI and bridging network to: 

          o Industry partners.
          o Investors/entrepreneurs.
          o Knowledge Transfer staff at other research organizations.
          o Funding bodies for cancer research.
          o Governmental organizations.
          o Service providers such as patent attorneys, law firms.

Profil du candidat.

  • You are expected to be able to support a professional organization at a high-quality level.
  • You have extensive knowledge of molecular (cancer) biology, preferably gained as part of acompleted PhD programme, that allows you to have in-depth discussions with researchers ontheir research findings.
  • You are knowledgeable and experienced in evaluating research findings for commercialpotential; in protecting intellectual property (e.g. through patent applications) and in thefurther development and commercialization of such research findings.
  • You are market-oriented and an experienced negotiator. We expect you to be an excellentcommunicator, particularly in English (both verbal and in writing), with good social skills andto be a self-starting, independent and flexible worker
